I’m
good with faces, but not with names…
As
much as you want to retain the name of everyone you
meet, storing a large
number of names in your memory isn’t
always easy.
Concentration is key. Here are some techniques
to practice:

Make
sure you hear the name clearly. Don’t hesitate
to say, “I’m
sorry, but I didn’t catch your name.
Could you tell me
again?”

Use
the person’s name immediately. This helps to
impress the name in
your memory.

Repeat
the name often as you converse. Repetition
fixes the name
firmly in your mind.

Connect
characteristics with names. No matter how
far-out the
association might be, it’s legitimate as
long as it helps
you remember the name.

Record
names. When you return from a business
meeting, write down
the names you want to remember.
When
memory fails…

If
you do forget a name, don’t be shy about admitting
it. It’s better
to admit having a memory lapse
than to embarrass
yourself or the person by using
the wrong name.
Remember to be sympathetic to
people who forget
your name as well. Offer your
hand, and say,
“I’m Elizabeth Harold, Ms. Janeway’s
assistant. I met
you at the conference in Dallas.”
Don’t make them
feel the embarrassment; take the
initiative and
introduce yourself.
